WHAT WE DO

 FOCB does not just teach skills. It uses a holistic approach that addresses the general needs of its clients and their families. Through the skills learned at the center, individuals become more independent, enjoy a better quality of life, and are able to utilize community resources, pursue an education, and choose a career path.

 FOCB’s FREE classes and services for the blind and visually impaired include:

·         Braille classes

·         Classes in assistive technology to learn how to use your cell phone, computers, and more…finding out about the latest in technology

·         Independent & daily living skills, including cooking and using appliances

·         Mobility training and learning to use a cane, travel on streets, buses and all transportation

·         Weekly peer support and advisory group

·         Weekly arts & crafts classes

·         Monthly virtual workshops

·         Monthly virtual book club discussions

·         Monthly field trips and leisure time activities

·         An on-site store with visual aids for hands-on inspection and purchase, and an Equipment Loan Program that enables clients to access
     adaptive technology that they otherwise could not afford.

·         Information and referral services

·         Outreach programs for seniors

·         A reading library with audible books

·         Serving as a liaison between clients/students and other agencies

·         Counseling visually impaired individuals to understand and accept their blindness

·         Low vision, optical, and non-optical devices training

·         Job coaching and readiness training

·         Self-advocacy training

·         Community integration

·         Kids’ Club for blind children and their families.

 FOCB reaches out to and supports the families by: 

·         Counseling sighted family members and friends of the blind individual to aid them in understanding blindness.

·         Serving as liaison between the client and other agencies. (Florida Division of Blind Services, Veterans Administration, Social Security Administration, etc.)

·         Working with eye care professionals.

·         Training and utilizing volunteers.

·         Increasing awareness about blindness through presentations, FOCB web site, social media, mail-outs, phone blasts, literature, and newsletters.

 The Florida Outreach Center for the Blind is a nonprofit organization/training facility that is nationally accredited by the Association for Education & Rehabilitation of the Blind & Visually Impaired (AER) and has met all standards set by the AER.

 All of our programs are FREE to the blind and visually impaired in FIVE COUNTIES: Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie, Indian, and Okeechobee Counties. Classes/training are available in English, Spanish, Creole and French. For more information on our center:
